Police custody and young people: Informing human rights responses

Project description:

Funded by the Australian Research Council via the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) scheme, this NDRI research project focuses on building new knowledge about young Australians’ experience of police custody to inform evidence-based solutions that protect their human rights while detained and help prevent future avoidable deaths in custody.

Using an innovative study design in three Australian states, this ambitious project will produce new knowledge on issues facing young people in police custody, which will directly inform recommendations to improve their safety and wellbeing.

The research project builds on Dr Walker’s PhD research, undertaken jointly with NDRI and the Burnet Institute, which remains the only published Australian study examining the lived experiences of police custody for young people.
