Take home naloxone available nationally

May 2022

Naloxone will be available in all Australian states and territories at no cost and without a prescription from July 1.

As part of the 2022 Federal Budget, the Australian Government announced that $19.6 million will be invested over the next four years to implement the Take Home Naloxone Program nationally.

“Along with others in the alcohol and other drug field, researchers at the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) have, for many years, been working with community partners to research and advocate for the wider availability of naloxone. Cost has been a significant barrier to access so this is very welcome news,” NDRI Director Professor Simon Lenton said.

Naloxone can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose or adverse reaction. From 1 July 2022, it will be available to anyone who may experience or witness an opioid overdose or adverse reaction.
