Scientia Professor Degenhardt, AO, has been named the leading Addiction Researcher in The Australian's 2024 Research Magazine. Scientia Professor Degenhardt, AO, was one of four UNSW Medicine & Health researchers making the list. The 2024 Research Magazine recognises the exceptional achievements of the Australian research community by analysing data and identifying the foremost researchers and research institutions across 250 fields.
In the field of addiction, health, and medicine, Scientia Professor Louisa Degenhart, AO, has been named the top researcher. The selection process employs an "impact score" which considers the quality of the research, analysed through top-tier journals, and the research's impact, evaluated through the number of citations. The impact score is determined through public data from Google Scholar, utilising its taxonomy to identify the 250 fields.
The League of Scholars, a talent discovery and research analytics firm, partners with The Australian to produce the Research Magazine. The magazine's origins date back to 2018, when League of Scholars CEO Paul McCarthy, a data specialist and industry fellow at the UTS Data Science Institute and an adjunct professor of computer science at UNSW, introduced The Australian's higher education editor, Tim Dodd to the possibilities offered by the vast amounts of public data being accumulated about research. Since then, Paul and Rasika have produced the data annually, with the top 250 lists gaining recognition and increasing interest from universities and other research institutions.
The Research Magazine has, over the years, utilised extensive data analysis in innovative ways, including identifying Australia's rising stars and lifetime achievers in research, top academic books, and leaders in research collaboration, interdisciplinary research, and university-linked start-up companies.
