NCETA Welcomes Placement Student Nicholas Rich to the team

September 2023

NCETA are excited to welcome third year Flinders University Bachelor of Public Health student Nicholas Rich to the team. Nicholas is working on a scoping review of instruments used to measure AOD-related presenteeism in the workplace.

As a public health student, Nicholas had a strong understanding of the detrimental effects of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) on individual and population health, particularly considering the increased risk of chronic conditions and diseases. However, Nicholas says that the research that he has been conducting as part of his professional placement has given him new perspectives on the shorter to midterm effects of AOD use and the everyday consequences of AOD misuse:

“I am grateful to have ended up at NCETA for my placement as I have begun to really put into practice the step-by-step processes required when conducting research. The team that I have been working with at NCETA have provided me with valuable advice about AOD and the research process that I otherwise would not have been aware of. This has allowed me to improve upon my academic knowledge and practical skills. I look forward to continuing the rest of my placement at NECTA and would like to thank the team at NECTA for giving me the opportunity to undertake my placement with them”.

NCETA are proud to offer a placement experience to Nicholas that will not only provide a new understanding of what instruments have been used to measure AOD-related presenteeism but identify future avenues for research on worker health, safety and performance.
