NCETA helping South Australian businesses respond to crystal methamphetamine in the workplace

August 2018

NCETA was invited by Business SA to participate in the launch, on Friday 27 July, 2018, of their Ice at Work white paper dealing with methamphetamine and other drug use in the workplace. NCETA’s Associate Professor Ken Pidd assisted Business SA to write the white paper and contributed a section on workplace culture.

At the launch, NCETA provided attendees with information on the patterns and prevalence of workplace methamphetamine use including a breakdown by workforce, occupation and industry. NCETA’s presentation used secondary data analyses from the 2016 National Drug Strategy Household Survey. It also examined workplace risk factors for drug and alcohol use and provided strategies to address those risks whilst highlighting the importance of adopting a whole-of-workplace approach when identifying and responding to workplace AOD issues.

The launch was also used by NCETA and Business SA to promote and seek involvement in NCETA’s three year SA Health-funded project to co-develop and trial strategies, tools and resources to assist South Australian workplaces to respond effectively to drug and alcohol issues. As part of that project, NCETA is working with businesses, industry associations, government, employer groups and employee groups to produce:

  • A series of toolbox resources
  • An online and face-to-face workplace training resource aimed at managers, supervisors and workers
    • A series of case studies examining the implementation of the toolboxes and other resources in different work contexts.
