Informing the work of Local Government Safe Cities Network

December 2018

NCETA was recently invited by the Local Government Safe Cities Network (LGSCN) to present information to LGSCN members on:

  • Current patterns and trends of AOD use in Australia
  • The implications of those patterns and trends on safer cities
  • Examples of strategies for frontline local government workers to assist them respond to AOD-related issues.

The LGSCN forms part of the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors and meets twice yearly to discuss issues surrounding city safety including the reduction of AOD-related harm in cities.

In approaching NCETA to present at its meeting in Adelaide on 22 November 2018, the LGSCN acknowledged the Centre’s research program on workforce development and sought advice on practical strategies to support frontline council staff required to manage people who have been using drugs and alcohol.

NCETA’s presentation featuring examples of the Centre’s recent secondary data analyses was extremely well-received. Participants were also provided with information on NCETA’s resources for frontline workers and how to access them from the Centre’s website.
