Evidence based policies for workplace impairment and drug testing

November 2014

Current policies and procedures for responding to workplace impairment (such as fatigue) in the construction industry vary considerably by jurisdiction and by individual companies.

The National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA), in collaboration with the Centre for Sleep Research, University of South Australia is undertaking an innovative project examining the evidence base around the causes, consequences and management of fatigue and alcohol and other drug use in the construction industries.

The findings of the review will be used to assist the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) to develop nationally consistent workplace impairment policy and procedures for the construction industry that are evidence-based, focused on ‘best’ practice, and ensure the health and wellbeing of all employees.
