Australasian Drug Strategy Conference – drug testing panel discussion

May 2017

The convenors of the 8th Australasian Drug Strategy Conference held in New Zealand between 2-5 May 2017 invited Professor Ann Roche to participate in a panel discussion examining drug and alcohol testing in the workplace.

Other panel members included representatives from New Zealand Police, Air New Zealand, New Zealand Police Association, Business NZ and the Drug Detection Agency.

Professor Roche focused on NCETA’s systematic review of qualitative research on the efficacy of workplace drug testing which found that:

  • The evidence base for the effectiveness of drug testing to improve work safety is tenuous.
  • Better dissemination of the current evidence is required to support evidence‐informed policy and practice.

The review formed part of NCETA’s long-established and highly regarded program of work examining the relationship between AOD use and workplaces.
